World No. 4 Johanna Konta swept away last year’s runner-up Sloane Stephens of America in the nail-biting quarterfinals of ongoing French Open tournament. The British professional thrashed the American by 6-1, 6-4 in a one-sided match at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris on Tuesday. With this miraculous win, Konta has become the first British woman to reach to the semi-final round of French Open after Jo Durie in 1983.
The 28-year-old Konta said on her victory celebration, “to play one of the best players in the world and then play at the level I did, I feel really proud of myself”. While Stephens expressed her disappointment on losing by saying, “there is not much you can do when someone is playing like that. I didn’t get a chance to really get into the match”.
Konta played brilliantly in the quarterfinal battle as she tried to build the pressure on American right from the first set. Konta will play her third semi-final match of the career after reaching to Australian Open semi-final round in 2016 and Wimbledon’s in 2017. Moreover, she has not progressed to any big grand finale so far in her tennis career stint. maybe this year she would turn her fortunes and clinch the title of Roland Garros 2019.
The Britisher will next meet either 19-year-old young gun Marketa Vondrousova or 31st-seeded Petra Martic. Both the players will battle later in the day to secure their berth in semi finals.
On the other side tennis great Roger Federer and World No. 2 Rafael Nadal both have reached to the semi-final round and will play against each other to win the trophy of French Open 2019 on their names. Nadal outlasted the Kei Nishikori of Japan with the margin of 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 in fourth round of the tournament while Swiss veteran Roger Federer registered the 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 clinical win over Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland.
